The SFU Department of Physics offers a wide range of research activities and programs leading to MSc and PhD degrees. The Physics department has a strong international reputation for its research and a research environment that is welcoming and collaborative. Currently the department is the home for 26 research professors who supervise approximately 65 graduate students and 10 postdoctoral fellows.

Established in 1965, SFU Physics has one of the oldest and most comprehensive biophysics and condensed matter programs in Canada. Since then, the department has expanded its world class reputation into a number of forefront research areas.

Typical of most Canadian universities, students with a bachelor level degree interested in research leading to a doctoral degree are admitted first into the Master’s degree program.  The Master’s degree program involves graduate level course work and research leading to a Master’s thesis. Qualified students will be accepted into the MA thesis program only if, in the opinion of the Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies Graduate Committee, a suitable Senior Supervisor is available. Senior Supervisors will be selected only from among Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies faculty members, faculty members who have joint appointments in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies and another department, and Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies Associate Faculty.

A student with incomplete academic preparation for the MA program may be required to take up to 12 hours of additional work in the Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies undergraduate program. The Graduate Committee will specify these requirements to the incoming student.

The Master's Program in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies is interdisciplinary and draws on the resources of faculty in many areas of the Arts and Sciences. Do you see yourself as part of a world that extends beyond where you currently live? Are you motivated to think and work internationally, in pursuit of a more peaceful and just world? Are you curious to learn about societies, economies, and political systems in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and/or the Middle East?  If so, then the Masters of Arts in International Studies (MAIS) may be perfect for you.

We are a community of scholars, teachers, and students who work on real world issues:  we seek to bridge the gap between what goes on at the university and what goes on in the places we study. Mostly, we work on regions facing significant challenges, whether it be long-standing conflicts, a lack of stable institutions that can protect human rights, or institutions that maintain or deepen economic inequality and poverty.

We believe that all of us have a role to play in resolving these issues, not as members of the so-called “developed” world, but as partners with individuals, grassroots organizations, and communities across the planet that are working to make the world a more promising place for all.

Benefits of the MAIS at SFU

There are many reasons to do your MA in International Studies at SFU, including:

  • You will study in our downtown Vancouver campus, affording a wealth of local opportunities
